Milei publicly called the meeting “wonderful” and said the two discussed sustaining Argentina’s austerity program and ensuring “liberal and libertarian ideas endure beyond his presidency.” Thiel had reportedly bought a roughly $12 million mansion in Barrio Parque, an exclusive Buenos Aires district, and temporarily relocated his family — enrolling his children in a local school for a planned stay of about two months.

Later reporting (New York Post, May 29, 2026, and others) framed the move as flight from a proposed California 5% wealth-tax ballot measure that could have cost Thiel billions, and from his stated fears of nuclear war and AI catastrophe in the Northern Hemisphere — with speculation about Uruguay land and a possible bunker. These motive characterizations are reported attributions, not established fact: the tax measure and Thiel’s documented catastrophist worldview are real, but the “fleeing nuclear war / AI meltdown” framing is the outlets’ interpretation, and the Uruguay-bunker claim was explicitly noted as unconfirmed. What IS firmly sourced is the relocation, the mansion purchase, and the documented week of government contacts culminating in the Casa Rosada meeting.
