WSJ Reports, From Unnamed Sources, That Trump Repeatedly Promised Top Officials Pardons Before He Leaves Office; White House Calls It a Joke
Sequence only, with date kinds.
- 2026-04-10 (WSJ publication date, by Josh Dawsey): The Wall Street Journal reported that Trump “has repeatedly promised his top administration officials pardons before he leaves office, according to people who have heard his comments.” The reported line, from a “recent meeting” and attributed to people with knowledge of it, is “I’ll pardon everyone who has come within 200 feet of the Oval.” Per the Journal, the sources “weren’t aware of specific pardons being offered to specific people for specific acts.” The Journal also reported, from some of the people, a conversation last year in the dining room next to the Oval Office in which Trump said he would hold a news conference and announce mass pardons before leaving office.
- Reaction (statement to the Journal, in the article): Karoline Leavitt: “The Wall Street Journal should learn to take a joke, however, the President’s pardon power is absolute.”
- 2026-10-01 (TIME transcript publication date per NBC; interview conducted earlier that week): Asked by TIME whether he was considering pardoning members of his administration before the end of his term, Trump answered “Yeah, sure I’d do that.” This is an on-record answer; it does not show any pardon has been drafted or granted.
