154 Episcopal bishops sign 'Whose Dignity Matters?' letter naming Renee Good and Alex Pretti as victims of state-sanctioned violence

A Letter to Our Fellow Americans.” The letter mourned Renée Good and Alex Pretti, two US citizens killed by federal agents during Operation Metro Surge in Minneapolis, naming them by name as “two precious lives lost to state-sanctioned violence.” Renée Nicole Macklin Good, a mother of three, was shot three times after an encounter with ICE agents on January 7; Alex Pretti, a 37-year-old ICU nurse at a Minneapolis VA hospital, was pinned to the ground and shot in the back during a confrontation with federal immigration officers, his killing captured on video.

The bishops declared that what happened in Minnesota “runs counter to God’s vision of justice and peace” and called for “the immediate suspension of ICE and Border Patrol operations in Minnesota and in any community where militarized enforcement has endangered residents or destroyed public trust.” The signatories spanned diocesan bishops, suffragans, and retired bishops from every US region and the church’s Latin American dioceses — a broad institutional cross-section rather than a factional subset.

The structural read is the breach of a captured-pulpit threshold. Mainline denominational leadership rarely speaks with one voice on a live federal enforcement action, and rarer still does it name specific victims and demand the operation’s suspension. Where the Minnesota CEOs’ letter six days earlier hedged on naming the actor responsible, the bishops did the opposite: they identified the violence as state-sanctioned and located moral responsibility in the operation itself. That a hierarchy as institutionally cautious as the Episcopal episcopate moved to explicit, named, collective condemnation marks the same defection dynamic visible in the corporate letter — legitimating institutions withdrawing cover from the operation — but carried further, into the moral register the regime most needs to keep on its side.
