House Democrats Introduce Articles of Impeachment Against DHS Secretary Kristi Noem

Rep. Robin Kelly (D-IL) introduced articles of impeachment against DHS Secretary Kristi Noem, with 53 House Democrats co-signing the effort, including Minnesota Representatives Angie Craig and Betty McCollum. Kelly stated: “Secretary Kristi Noem is an incompetent leader, a disgrace to our democracy, and I am impeaching her for obstruction of justice, violation of public trust, and self-dealing.”

The three articles of impeachment alleged: (1) Obstruction of Congress—stemming from denying Congressional members access to DHS facilities and withholding disaster relief funding; (2) Violation of Public Trust—allegedly denying ICE detainees due process and breaching First and Fourth Amendment protections; and (3) Self-Dealing—reports indicating Noem awarded $220 million in contracts to a firm operated by her spokesperson’s husband.

The impeachment push followed Operation Metro Surge in Minnesota, including the fatal shooting of Renee Nicole Good by ICE agent Jonathan Ross. Noem had called the shooting an act of “domestic terrorism” by Good, contradicting video evidence showing Good turning away from the agent when shot. While the Republican-controlled House made passage unlikely, the articles represented formal documentation of alleged constitutional violations for the historical record.
