Video Analyses by NYT and ABC News Reconstruct the Renee Good Shooting Frame by Frame

On January 9, 2026 — two days after ICE agent Jonathan Ross shot and killed Renee Nicole Good, a 37-year-old poet and mother of three, on a residential Minneapolis street — ABC News and The Washington Post published concurrent forensic reconstructions of the killing using video metadata and witness footage. ABC News established through frame-by-frame analysis that 399 milliseconds elapsed between the first and second shots, and 299 milliseconds between the second and third shots, for a total active firing window of approximately 698 milliseconds. Both outlets found that Ross fired the first shot through the windshield — a non-fatal wound — then repositioned to the driver’s-side window to fire the two subsequent, fatal shots. Good’s steering wheel was visibly turning to the right, away from Ross, more than one second before the first shot was fired.

The New York Times subsequently published a millisecond-level synchronization of multiple angles on January 15, 2026, which concluded — against the Trump administration’s public claim that Ross acted because Good was “trying to run him over” — that “currently available visual evidence shows no indication Agent Jonathan Ross got run over.” The NYT analysis traced how Ross placed himself in a position near the vehicle and documented that the car was turning away from him at the moment of the first shot. CNN and Media Matters amplified the findings on January 16.

Index (index.ngo), an investigative NGO specializing in open-source forensic reconstruction, published a preliminary 3D photogrammetric model on January 9, updated on January 21. Their spatial reconstruction demonstrated that Ross was not in the vehicle’s forward path when he fired. An independent autopsy commissioned by Good’s family, covered by NBC News on January 14, found that the fatal wound was to the left temple — consistent with the driver’s-side window firing sequence established by the video analyses, not consistent with a frontal impact.

These reconstructions collectively shattered the administration’s “self-defense” justification.
