CPB Announces Its Board Voted to Dissolve the Corporation After Congress Rescinded All Its Federal Funding

Sequence only, with date kinds.

  • January 5, 2026 (announcement date, from the release dateline): the Corporation for Public Broadcasting announced that its Board of Directors “has voted to dissolve the organization after 58 years of service” The release does not give the date of the vote itself, so this entry is dated to the announcement and the vote date is unconfirmed.
  • CPB’s stated reason: the decision “follows Congress’s rescission of all of CPB’s federal funding” That funding action is covered in 2025-07-04–npr-pbs-defunding.
  • In the release, CEO Patricia Harrison is quoted saying the final act was to protect the system by “dissolving, rather than allowing the organization to remain defunded and vulnerable to additional attacks.” Board chair Ruby Calvert is quoted saying the board was left with “no way to continue the organization or support the public media system that depends on it.”
  • CPB’s closure plan, as a statement of intent only: remaining funds to be distributed “in accordance with Congress’s intent”
  • Court-filing confirmation (a later joint filing by NPR, PBS and the federal defendants in NPR v. Trump, D.D.C.): the parties recite that the board “voted to dissolve” and that CPB then “filed Articles of Dissolution in the District of Columbia.” The filing also quotes the court’s ruling in that case, which treated CPB-directed claims as moot because “CPB no longer exists.” See 2026-03-31–judge-moss-strikes-down-eo-14290-npr-pbs-first-amendment-victory.

Not established here: the date of the vote, the date the Articles of Dissolution were filed, and what became of CPB’s remaining funds. The release is CPB’s own account. The court filing is a recital by the parties, not a finding.
