Border Patrol Chief Bovino Returns to Chicago, Promises Federal Agents 'For Years'

After briefly leading immigration enforcement operations in Charlotte, North Carolina in November, Border Patrol Chief Gregory Bovino returned to Chicago in mid-December to resume federal immigration operations. On social media, Bovino declared: “Don’t call it a comeback; we’re gonna be here for years.”

The announcement made clear that federal immigration enforcement in Chicago would continue indefinitely, despite ongoing legal battles over Bovino’s conduct. A federal judge had previously found Bovino “repeatedly lied” under oath about his actions during Operation Midway Blitz, including deploying tear gas against protesters in Little Village. The judge had ordered him to wear a body camera and report to court daily.

Bovino’s return and defiant messaging demonstrated the administration’s commitment to maintaining aggressive immigration enforcement in sanctuary cities regardless of legal constraints or community opposition. His promise of “years” of federal presence represented an escalation of the administration’s confrontation with Chicago city officials.
