United Kingdom Suspends Intelligence Sharing with US Over Caribbean Boat Strikes

The United Kingdom suspended intelligence sharing with the United States on suspected drug vessels in the Caribbean, assessing that US military strikes violate international law. The UK did not want to be complicit in what it considered illegal operations. The UK Attorney General urged ministers to cut intelligence cooperation. This represented a major break from America’s closest intelligence ally and Five Eyes partner. The suspension came after US forces conducted multiple lethal strikes on vessels, killing dozens of people including shipwrecked survivors in a September 2 ‘double tap’ attack. Canada later followed with similar restrictions, formally instructing Washington not to use Canadian intelligence in lethal operations.
