Federal Agents Raid South Shore Chicago Apartment Building With About 300 Agents and a Helicopter, Detain 37; No One Charged Criminally
On the early morning of September 30, 2025 (event date), approximately 300 federal agents surrounded an apartment complex at 7500 S. South Shore Drive in Chicago, and other agents rappelled onto the roof of the 130-unit, five story building from a Blackhawk military helicopter. Gregory Bovino was on-scene and oversaw the operation, and NewsNation cameras followed the agents. At least 37 people were arrested for immigration violations. Per the Illinois Accountability Commission (IAC) brief of April 2026, federal prosecutors have not filed criminal charges against anyone who was arrested, and DHS has not publicly released any judicial warrants.
What the primary records say
- Stated justification. The IAC brief quotes the agents’ incident report: the building was “known to house dangerous undocumented individuals from Venezuela” with suspected Tren de Aragua (TdA) affiliation. The report named no judicial warrant and cited “written consent” from the building manager. Bovino told an embedded reporter that agents planned “to hit via force with guns”.
- DHS count. Amnesty summarizes a DHS statement: two individuals with affiliations to TdA were detained, in addition to 35 held for immigration violations.
- Residents’ accounts. The IAC reports that over two dozen residents said agents entered without presenting a judicial warrant. One resident, a 67-year-old U.S. citizen, told reporters: “I asked if they had a warrant, and I asked for a lawyer.”
- What records show. The IAC, citing ProPublica, reports that the operation was “based on intelligence that there were illegal aliens unlawfully occupying” apartments.
- Claims. Amnesty reports that 18 residents filed legal claims seeking accountability and reparations.
- IAC position. The IAC found reasonable cause to believe federal agents should be formally investigated.
