On 2025-06-10 (announcement date) the Army said it would change the names of seven installations back to the names they carried before the 2023 renaming, each now assigned to a different namesake with the same surname. Fort Cavazos in Texas, renamed in 2023 for Gen. Richard E. Cavazos, the Army’s first Hispanic four-star general, goes back to “Fort Hood”. The Army’s release says the name now honors Col. Robert B. Hood, a World War I Distinguished Service Cross recipient, not the Confederate general the post was originally named for. The other six are Fort A.P. Hill, Fort Pickett, Fort Robert E. Lee, Fort Gordon, Fort Polk and Fort Rucker. The announcement came hours after Trump previewed it to troops at Fort Bragg; Hegseth had signed the Fort Bragg order in February 2025 and reversed Fort Benning/Fort Moore in March.

Date kinds: 2025-06-10 is the Army’s announcement; the release says the Army “will take all necessary actions”, so signage and formal completion dates were not established. The Army release was read through a full-text mirror because army.mil refused scripted access (Access Denied); the AP copy was read directly.

Why it matters here: the same post is where Hegseth’s Pentagon set the December 2026 firing-squad execution of Nidal Hasan, who killed 13 people there in 2009 (see 2026-10-05 entry). Whether the renaming bears on that site choice is not reported; no official reason for choosing Fort Hood has been given (see that entry’s site-sequence addendum).

Not established: objections attributed to the Cavazos family or Rep. Joaquin Castro (named in the task lead) were not found in the two AP texts read and are left out pending a primary source.
