Malafaia Publicly Urges Bolsonaro to Invoke Article 142 — Evangelical Adviser Advocates Armed Forces Intervention After Electoral Defeat
Following Bolsonaro’s electoral defeat to Lula in the October 30, 2022 run-off election, evangelical pastor Silas Malafaia released a video publicly advocating that President Bolsonaro invoke Article 142 of the Brazilian constitution — a provision concerning the military’s role in maintaining institutional order — as justification for armed forces intervention against what Malafaia called “institutional disorder” created by the Supreme Court.
In the video, Malafaia acknowledged that unilateral military action without presidential authorization would constitute a coup d’état, but argued Article 142 gave Bolsonaro the authority to compel military intervention. He called on the armed forces to restore order against what he characterized as an out-of-control judiciary.
Malafaia also served as a sponsor of pro-Bolsonaro demonstrations in the aftermath of the election, including rallies attended by Michelle Bolsonaro (Jair’s wife), which called on the military not to accept the election results.
This conduct became central to the federal police investigation completed in August 2025, which recommended charges against Malafaia for “defining strategies of coercion and the dissemination of false narratives… which ultimately aim to coerce members of the judiciary.” Police alleged Malafaia played a “central role in designing strategies to pressure judges.”
Structural endpoint: This episode represents the logical extreme of the government-mountain capture doctrine when applied to an electoral defeat: the captured-pulpit figure advising the captured government figure on how to remain in power through illegal means. The coup advocacy was the direct downstream consequence of a pastoral adviser operating without institutional accountability.
