Al-Ahram Gate Publishes Egyptian-American Statement Backing Morsi's Decrees and Urging a Purge of Media and Police; PolitiFact Identifies El-Sayed Among the Signers

The Egyptian daily Al-Ahram’s web portal (Al-Ahram Gate) published, with a New York dateline, a statement by a group of Egyptians in the United States backing the decisions President Mohamed Morsi had issued the previous Thursday. The headline, in Arabic, says the statement endorses his decisions and calls on him to purge the media and police.

What the Arabic text says (translated here; the Arabic is in the claim records):

  • The signers call themselves leaders of the Egyptian community, support the revolutionary decisions the president took, and ask him to purge the media and the police as soon as possible.
  • Their stated reason is that remnants of the former regime control many pillars of the state, the judiciary among them.
  • They say they do not hide their fear of such powers in the president’s hands, and ask Morsi to clarify that the supplementary constitutional declaration ends once the constitution is written.
  • They say they strongly reject voices courting America and Europe to take a position against the Egyptian government.
  • The signers are individuals and organizations. One entry on the list reads, in Arabic, Dr. Abdul Rahman El-Sayed, New York. The Al-Ahram text does not say this is the Michigan Senate candidate. PolitiFact, which translated the Arabic, states that he signed with other Egyptian Americans.
