Sarkeesian Launches Tropes vs. Women in Video Games Kickstarter; Coordinated Harassment Follows Within Hours

On May 17, 2012, Anita Sarkeesian launched a Kickstarter campaign to fund Tropes vs. Women in Video Games, a planned five-video series examining gender tropes in game design, with a stated funding goal of $6,000. The goal was met within 24 hours. Within hours of launch, 4chan’s /v/ board, Reddit gaming communities, and YouTube comment sections mobilized a coordinated harassment campaign against Sarkeesian that continued through the campaign’s close. Documented tactics included rape and death threats sent to her email and social accounts, doxxing of her personal contact information, repeated vandalism of her Wikipedia biography with pornographic and racist content, hacking attempts against her accounts, a purpose-built browser game inviting users to click her photograph until it showed simulated bruising, mass-flagging campaigns attempting to have her videos removed as “terrorism,” and a fabricated narrative branding her a fraudulent “scammer” who intended to pocket the funds. The campaign closed on June 15, 2012, having raised $158,922 from 6,968 backers — more than 26 times the original $6,000 goal. The episode predates Gamergate’s August 2014 political activation by more than two years, demonstrating that the coordinated-harassment architecture later associated with Gamergate was already operational and rehearsed against a feminist media critic in 2012.
