Dan Bongino resigned as FBI Deputy Director after less than a year on the job, with FBI Director Kash Patel naming career counter-terrorism agent Christopher Raia as his replacement. Bongino, a former Secret Service agent and conservative media personality, gave no public reason for his departure beyond calling it "the honor of a lifetime" to serve alongside Patel.
Raia is a career counter-terrorism official who led the investigation into the 2025 New Orleans New Year's attack, and will serve as co-deputy director of the bureau. His appointment represented a pivot toward career law enforcement experience after the politically-connected Bongino's brief tenure.
Patel also announced the FBI would permanently close the J. Edgar Hoover Building, which had served as headquarters since 1975, with the bureau moving to the Reagan Building. Additionally, Patel announced a "massive overhaul" of the Strategic Information & Operations Center (SIOC), renaming it the Director's Strategic Information Center (DSIC) with physical upgrades, increased personnel, and changes to information distribution.
