HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and USDA Secretary Brooke Rollins released the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, 2025–2030, which Kennedy called "the most significant reset of federal nutrition policy in history." At a White House briefing, Kennedy declared: "As secretary of Health and Human Services, my message is clear: Eat real food."
The most significant changes included prioritizing protein over carbohydrates, recommending full-fat dairy instead of low-fat options, and cutting out processed foods like white bread, chips, and candy. The guidelines represented a major departure from decades of federal nutrition advice that emphasized low-fat diets and the food pyramid.
The "Make America Healthy Again" (MAHA) movement driven by Kennedy has gained traction in state legislatures, with food additives among the most common targets. In December 2025, the USDA approved waivers sought by six states, and eighteen states will block SNAP purchases of candy and sugary drinks in 2026.
