Border Patrol Agent Charles Exum shot 30-year-old US citizen Marimar Martinez five times, causing seven wounds, during 'Operation Midway Blitz' in Chicago's Brighton Park neighborhood—approximately 280 miles from the US-Canada land border. Martinez was in her car when she encountered Border Patrol agents, reportedly honking and yelling at them. Body camera footage showed an agent with an assault rifle saying 'Do something b--ch' before shooting. DHS initially claimed agents were 'boxed in by 10 cars' and that Martinez had a gun, but video evidence contradicted these claims. Agent Exum later bragged in a text message: 'I fired 5 shots and she had 7 holes. Put that in your book boys.' Martinez survived and drove away from the scene. Federal prosecutors dismissed all criminal charges against her on November 20, 2025. Exum testified he faced no discipline. The shooting presaged the January 2026 killing of Renee Nicole Good in Minneapolis under similar circumstances.
